3 Reasons Why You Can’t Resist BBQ

It’s easy to convince people to eat BBQ because it’s a type of food that is simply irresistible! The hard part is making it taste good enough that they come back for more, but that’s not a problem for us at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive! A person’s natural desire for BBQ combined with our award-winning way of preparing it creates the best BBQ in Des Moines!

Have you ever wondered just what it is about this amazing food that makes it so irresistible? We think about stuff like that all the time! The following facts are a big reason why and we bet you’ll agree.

The Aroma

The very first sensation that grabs you when it comes to BBQ is that scent that makes your mouth water immediately! Once you step into the dining room at our Des Moines family restaurant, you’re already hooked. (Sometimes it even hits you in the parking lot before you make it through the doors!)

Once that magnificent aroma hits your nose, your stomach is bound to start rumbling. If you weren’t already hungry before, you most definitely are now! Any food that can do that to your sense of smell is definitely one you want to treat your sense of taste with.

The Flavor

The art of BBQ requires patience because the best flavors come out when the cooking is done low and slow. Wobbly Boots BBQ chooses to smoke our meats. This process allows us to create the most tender, juicy, flavorful meats possible, always slow-smoking them over our favorite wood – hickory.

First, we generously coat the meats with our secret-recipe rub. It then gets a carefully selected amount of time in the smoker. The reason we use hickory is that it lends a rich, full-bodied flavor to all of our meats. Once it’s done, those meats get a dose of our house recipe BBQ sauce, and the result is a mouthwatering flavor that is irresistible!

The Variety

BBQ, especially the type we serve at the Boot, is also a very versatile meal. There are all kinds of delicious dishes to choose from, and we put them together in a variety of ways so that even the “same old meat” you usually order can be enjoyed in a delicious and fascinating new way.

We serve savory hickory-smoked meats on their own, but also as an additional ingredient in most of the dishes we serve. These meats include (but are not limited to):

  • Hand-Pulled Pork
  • Sliced Turkey Breast
  • Sweet Smoked Italian Sausage
  • Applewood Smoked Ham
  • Tender Smoked Brisket
  • Our House Favorite Burnt Ends

The Boot Makes It Easy!

As if the food itself wasn’t already enough, we make it even more irresistible by taking care of all the work for you. Even the most skilled grill master will admit, it takes a lot of work to make the best BBQ, so when someone else can do it deliciously, it’s a lot easier to let them. We’ve perfected the art of cooking it, you simply get to come in and enjoy it! We even clean up the plates for you when you’re done.

The next time that you feel a BBQ craving coming on (even if it’s 7 days a week!) head on over to Wobbly Boots Roadhouse for a plateful of our mouthwateringly delicious, hickory-smoked meats. The savory aroma will grab your attention and the flavor… well, let’s just say, we’ll be seeing a lot of each other from there on out!

The Importance of Happy Hour (It Does a Body Good!)

Taking a break from work stress and home responsibilities every once in a while is important for maintaining good mental health. That’s what the best Happy Hour in Des Moines is here to help you do! As a matter of fact, studies have shown that enjoying Happy Hour can be good for your physical health in some ways too.

Happy Hour Origins

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse didn’t create the concept of Happy Hour (although we have done a good job perfecting it!) “Happy Hours” were originally created as a form of entertainment to distract men out at sea from the day to day workings on the ship and keep them in good spirits. Rather than drinking, they would box, wrestle, enjoy music, or watch movies. During Prohibition, the term “Happy Hour” was picked up to describe the time when people would secretly meet for a few pre-dinner cocktails in private homes or speakeasies before heading out to the restaurants that couldn’t serve alcohol.

Today, we don’t have to sneak around to enjoy a few cocktails together. (Thank goodness!) We are free to enjoy a drink anytime that we want. There are a few benefits to meeting up with friends and co-workers during Happy Hour though. Please keep in mind that these benefits only hold up when you drink responsibly and in moderation.

Happy Hour…

Improves Life at the Office
Having a drink with your co-workers after the work day is over is a great way to de-stress and get to know each other in a more relaxed atmosphere. Getting the chance to form relationships outside of the pressure of work and deadlines can help everyone to work together better once you get back to the office.

Lowers Depression
Studies have shown that spending time enjoying the company of others relieves built-up tension and lowers the risk of depression. Both of those things are excellent for improving your overall mental health at work and at home.

Improves Heart Health
We covered the many surprising health benefits of beer, when consumed in moderation, in a past blog. One of those benefits is boosting your “good” cholesterol by 10-20%, which aids in reducing the chances of heart disease, stroke, and heart attacks.

Makes the Weekend Come Faster
Well, technically you don’t get to Friday any faster, but time flies when you’re having fun so it will seem that way! As the old song goes, “Everybody’s working for the weekend!” Well, taking part in Happy Hour at our Des Moines BBQ restaurant & bar is a great way to make that weekend seem not so far away. All work and no play is no fun at all. Invite the office, and your friends outside of the office, to join you for a mid-week break. You all deserve it!

Happy Hour at the Boot

Every Monday-Friday (5 glorious days a week) from 3-6 pm, our BBQ restaurant & bar in Des Moines hosts an incredible Happy Hour. We offer some fantastic drink specials so you can enjoy yourself without spending all of that hard-earned money you made at the job you’re taking a break from!

All of our 18 draft beers, including many of your favorite Iowa brews, are only $3 each. We also have a few specialty cocktails specially-priced for you during Happy Hour. Pair any one of those drinks with some of our awesome appetizers and your time here gets even better!

Join us soon at the Boot for the best Happy Hour in the Des Moines area and be sure to invite a few co-workers and friends to join you. We’ve got plenty of room for everyone and we can’t wait to welcome you all to our place!

The Best Onion Rings for National Onion Ring Day

Saturday, June 22, 2019, is National Onion Rings Day. America has a slight obsession with all things fried, but how can you blame us when it tastes so doggone good? Fryers create some of the best bar food in Des Moines. Our Famous Onion Rings are a perfect example of that.

At Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive, we’ve created a side dish so incredible in our onion rings that they’ve earned a spot on the appetizer menu too!  Some even say our giant onion rings are practically a meal by themselves!

The Boots’ Famous Onion Rings

First, we start with great big, fresh, crispy yellow onions. These are cut into thick rings, then bathed in buttermilk. After that, we hand-bread them in our specially seasoned flour. The final step is placing them in the fryer until they are a perfect golden brown.

A side of chipotle ranch finishes the preparation, and your server brings them out to you hot, crisp, and irresistible! The only bad thing about our onion rings is the few moments you have to wait for them to cool off enough to bite into!

How Do You Dip?

Your favorite family restaurant in Des Moines prefers to serve our delicious onion rings with a side of chipotle ranch, but they are also incredible dipped in ketchup or our house-made BBQ sauce. During our research, we found a few other sauces that people enjoy dipping their onion rings into. One older cookbook calls for a sauce made of melted butter and mustard. Here are a few other variations we came across. How do they sound to you? (Personally, we’d stick with the chipotle ranch!)

  • Tangy ketchup
  • Yogurt
  • Sour Cream
  • Cheese Dip

Onion Ring History

As with many popular foods, the official origin of the onion ring is unclear. Many different stories lay claim to creating this brilliant food. Here are a few of those stories.

  • A Crisco advertisement in 1933 showed up in the New York Times featuring a recipe for deep-fried onion rings. It called for rings of onions to be dipped in milk and then dredged in flour. (That sounds about right to us!)
  • Kirby’s Pig Stand, a restaurant chain founded in Oak Cliff, Texas with over 100 locations across the U.S.A in the 1940s, claims to have created the onion ring in the early 1920s. They also state that Texas Toast was all their idea too.
  • Even before that, the Middleton New York Daily Times published a recipe for French Fried Onions in 1910. They don’t claim that this is the original onion ring, but it is dated earlier than the other claims and it sounds pretty familiar.
  • One more recipe discovered in John Mollard’s cookbook “The Art of Cookery Made Easy and Refined” in 1802 was titled “Fried Onions with Parmesan Cheese.” Calling for rings of onions dipped in a batter of flour, cream, salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese all deep fried in “boiling” lard, this is definitely a predecessor to the onion ring we know and love today.

Whether you choose to order our Famous Onion Rings as an upgraded side dish alongside the best BBQ in the Des Moines area or on a great big plate as an appetizer to enjoy with an ice-cold beer, you know you’re going to get the best onion ring in Iowa served to you every time. Come in to Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive soon and give them a try. We’ve gotta warn you though, it’s hard to eat just one!

5 Things That Dads and BBQ Have in Common

Father’s Day weekend is upon us (Sunday, June 16, 2019) and we bet you are racking your brain for the perfect present to give good old Dad. Well, look no further! Lunch, dinner, or maybe even brunch at the best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines is something that any father will love. Dads and BBQ have a lot in common, after all. Here is our Wobbly Boots Roadhouse list of similarities between these two great things.

D-A-D and B-B-Q

Three small letters make up these two short words that = great big, wonderful things! No man in your life rates bigger than Dad and no flavor rates higher than our house-recipe BBQ sauce. You can even pick up a bottle to put a bow on and give to your father to take home.

Warm and Comforting

BBQ is an excellent comfort food. After a rough day, a delicious meal from Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is almost as good as a great big hug from your dad when you are feeling low. The best of both worlds is when you can share a meal here with your father after one of those incredible hugs.

Robust Describes Them Both

We found a couple of different meanings for this word that seemed to fit our two subjects perfectly.

  • #1: strong and effective in all or most situations or conditions (just like a father)
  • #2: rich and full-bodied (like the flavor or our juicy, hickory-smoked meats.)

Jack of All Trades

Most people begin life seeing their father as infinitely wise, knowing everything about every possible subject. Even as we get older and realize our “Super-Dad” is merely human, he always seems to find a way to master whatever it is we need to be done.

Our Des Moines BBQ restaurant menu is filled with mouth-watering BBQ, but there are lots of other flavors that come out of our kitchen too, making it a perfect place to take a family that can’t agree on one type of food.

Always Here For You

No matter where you are or what you need, a good dad is always a phone call away, ready to lend a hand. Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is here, ready to serve you, seven days a week beginning Monday-Friday at 11:00 am and early on Saturday and Sunday for brunch at 9:00 am.

Our family restaurant in Des Moines has so much in common with dear old Dad, this is naturally the perfect place to bring him to celebrate Father’s Day this year. A full menu of delicious foods to choose from, plenty of televisions to catch his favorite games, and a warm, friendly dining room to enjoy it all in. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there and we hope to see all of you this Sunday at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse.

Memorial Day Fun Facts

Memorial Day does mean more than “just a great holiday to throw a BBQ party.” It is a federal holiday set aside every year to honor and remember all of the soldiers that fought for our country that are no longer with us. Wobbly Boots Roadhouse found some very interesting facts to share with you about this meaningful holiday.

  • Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, In the 1880s, veterans of the Civil War honored their fallen comrades by decorating their graves with flags and flowers.
  • People began referring to it as Memorial Day in 1882, but there wasn’t a legal name-change recorded until 1967.
  • For many years this holiday was officially observed on May 30. Congress decided that some holidays should always fall on a Monday to allow a 3-day weekend, so in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act came into effect, permanently moving Memorial Day to the last Monday in May.
  • American flags should be flown at half-mast on Memorial Day, but only until noon. At that time they are immediately raised to full-staff until sunset. This way part of the day is reserved for remembering the fallen, and the rest of the day is for enjoying the freedoms that those people helped us to have.
  • A wonderful tradition that few know about was made into a law by Congress in 2000. President Bill Clinton signed the National Moment of Remembrance Act which states that all Americans must pause at 3 pm, local time, and take a moment to remember the brave men and women that fought for our freedom. Happy Hour at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse begins at 3 pm on Mondays, which is perfect timing for raising a glass to those fallen heroes after a moment of silence.

However you decide to spend your Memorial Day Weekend, we hope that you stay safe and enjoy it with the people you care most about. If you get the chance, join us at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse. It’s always a lot more fun to be at work when you’re here with us!
