Warm Up From a Cold Iowa Winter With These Delicious Drinks

A great big plate full of the best BBQ in Des Moines will definitely warm you up on a cold, Iowa day or night. While you’re waiting for the talented chefs at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive to cook it up for you, we’ve got a few tasty beverages from behind the bar that can start thawing you out.  Here are a few ideas for a delicious drink to tide you over until the food arrives.

Coffee/Tea/Hot Chocolate

Hot tea or coffee always hits the spot on a cold day and when you add some special ingredients from behind the Wobbly Boots BBQ bar, it tastes even better! Some of our favorite coffee add-ins taste wonderful mixed into hot chocolate too. (Perfect for the person that doesn’t mind a bit of dessert before dinner!) These include Bailey’s, Irish Whiskey, Kahlua, and Amaretto.

As for hot tea, it’s a main ingredient in a classic Hot Toddy, which also contains honey, lemon juice, and a hearty shot of whiskey. (Actually, some recipes skip the tea and just use hot water!) An added benefit of this particular cocktail is the fact that it’s also terrific for tackling many symptoms of a winter cold.

Whiskey Drinks

We already mentioned a Hot Toddy above, but whiskey alone has a reputation for warming up a person when the weather gets cold. A shot of whiskey gives you an immediate sensation of warmth because it causes your blood vessels to dilate which brings warm blood closer to the surface of your skin. The feeling won’t last long but it will sure taste great going down! By the time the warmth wears off, your dinner should be hot and ready to take its place.

Bloody Marys

Even though this drink is served over ice, it can still bring the heat! With the proper ingredients added to the base mix, our bartenders can really give your Bloody Mary a spicy kick. Just tell us how hot you think you can handle it. With the addition of some special spices, the right amount of hot sauce, and certain flavored vodkas, you’ll soon be enjoying a cocktail that will definitely warm you up.

Cold Beer & Hot BBQ

If you aren’t the type of person that likes to drink hot beverages along with a hot meal, once the food arrives you may want to switch over to drinking something cold and refreshing. For example, our large selection of 18 different draft beers is a popular choice to pair with hickory-smoked BBQ. We always keep a nice selection of locally brewed Iowa beers on tap too, so you know we’ll have something you’ll love!

The talented bartenders at our BBQ restaurant & bar in Des Moines are here to help you decide exactly which drink you’ll enjoy most to go along with your meal. If you happen to join us during Happy Hour any Monday-Friday from 3-6 pm, you may even get some of those awesome drinks at a discounted price! Hot or cold, we’ll make sure you get something refreshing and delicious.

When You Can’t Decide… Combination Meals to the Rescue!

The menu at our Des Moines BBQ restaurant features an enormous variety of items, both BBQ and non-BBQ dishes, that make it extremely difficult to choose what to order. (They’re all so darn good!) For those days when you simply can’t decide, Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is here to help with some fantastic combination meals. That way, you get to enjoy more than one of your favorite foods at the same time!

BBQ Trio Plate

Even if you come into Wobbly Boots BBQ determined to enjoy one of our mouthwatering hickory-smoked meats, you’ve still got to choose which one. Not to worry, because we have a plate for that! The BBQ Trio Plate combines your choice of 3 types of meat to total a full pound of yumminess! (We’ve also got a Double-Meat Plate too if you’re not quite hungry enough for 3.)

  • Hand-Pulled Pork
  • Smoked Turkey Breast
  • Sweet Smoked Italian Sausage
  • Applewood Smoked Ham
  • Tender Smoked Brisket
  • Our House Favorite Brisket Burnt Ends

Chicken & Rib Combo

Our hickory-smoked meats go beyond just what we offer for sandwiches and smoked meat plates. We couldn’t call ourselves a BBQ restaurant without knowing how to smoke a succulent rack of ribs, but we also deliciously slow-smoke chicken over hickory as well. When you order this tasty dish, you get the best of both worlds all on one plate!

Ribbies & Wings

The appetizer menu is another section where you’ll find hickory-smoked goodness throughout. Our Wobbly Wings are a customer favorite, but those Baby Back Ribs are hard to resist too. With this menu item, you get 4 of each. Delicious!

Wobbly Boots Sampler

Craving a bit more than just Ribbies & Wings? Then you’ll want to take a look at this amazing sampler platter. Not only do you get 4 Baby Back Ribs and 4 Wobbly Wings, but we also pile on 4 of our Famous Onion Rings and 4 Bacon Wrapped Shrimp. For this plate, you’d better come in hungry or willing to share with the rest of the table!

Cowboy Cobb

If you’re trying to include more vegetables in your diet but the smell of our savory, hickory-smoked meats is tempting you to skip the salad, you don’t have to. Our Cowboy Cobb, also referred to as the “King of Salads,” allows you to have your salad and your BBQ too! A chilled bowl of crisp greens is generously topped with our smoked ham and turkey, plus crumbled bacon, hard-boiled egg, avocado, tomatoes, red onion, cheddar-jack cheese, and our 5-cheese mozzarella blend. This one satisfies even the biggest of appetites and it’s available in a half-portion too.

Mac & Cheese Burger

Sometimes the main dish is an easy decision, like our Black Angus burgers, but you’re still having a hard time deciding between our many homestyle side dishes. With this dish, our famous homemade Mac & Cheese already comes on the burger but you still get to enjoy another savory side dish along with the meal! (Although the diner in the picture below opted for double Mac & Cheese. We totally get that!)

Not only are the combination plates at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive a great way to keep from having to decide between your favorite foods, but they’re also a wonderful way to try more than one of our menu items in the same visit. The next time you bring the gang to our family restaurant in Des Moines, consider ordering one of these delicious dishes. You won’t be disappointed!

January is National Soup Month – Celebrate Wobbly Boots-Style!

January is supposed to be a cold month in the Midwest (although so far this season we’ve seen some unseasonal temperatures) usually making it a great time to celebrate National Soup Month. Here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive, we’ve also got 2 deliciously irresistible soups on the menu each day.

Our kitchen makes a mean pot of soup that can be enjoyed either by the cup or by the bowl, alone for a light meal or paired with the best BBQ in Des Moines. We’ve got one scrumptious flavor that’s always on the menu plus a second option that changes daily depending on what the talented cooks in our kitchen are in the mood to create that day.

Our Famous Baked Potato Soup

This particular soup has become so very popular at our Des Moines family restaurant that it has earned a permanent spot on the menu, available year-round, 7 days a week! It’s rich, creamy, and everything you could possibly ask for when you’re craving a hot bowl of soup.

Every serving is packed full of chunks of potatoes and garnished with cheddar-jack cheese, crumbled bacon, and green onions. It’s a delight for all of your senses! First, you’ll love the look of the colorful presentation, then the savory scent will hit you. Your taste buds will tingle with the first spoonful, and you’ll immediately feel satisfaction deep in your stomach. You can’t really hear our soup unless the person next to you is slurping it, but that’s okay because you’ll very likely be doing the same thing! Your noise will cancel out theirs.

Soup of the Day

Even though our Baked Potato Soup is hard to resist, some days you may be in the mood to try something different. For that very reason, we also offer a second made-from-scratch soup option daily. It changes depending on what type of delicious concoction our chefs have decided to whip up that day. Just ask your server which savory soup we’re offering when you come in and sit down to order.

Pair It Up

A great big, hot, savory bowl of soup may be enough for your main meal but if you’re in the mood for more than just soup, we’ve got you covered. There are a couple of different Soup Combo Meals on the menu to choose from that pair our amazing soups with either a salad or a sandwich.

  • Soup & Salad
Enjoy a cup of your favorite soup paired with a crisp garden salad full of fresh ingredients and your choice of salad dressing.
  • Soup & Sandwich
In this case, you get a cup of your favorite soup paired with a grilled sourdough sandwich. Sandwich choices are:

    • Turkey & Swiss
    • Ham & Swiss
    • 4-Cheese Grilled Cheese

Hot, Delicious, & Satisfying!

A hot, delicious bowl of soup has got to sound good to you after reading all about our mouthwatering choices, so treat yourself! Head on over to our BBQ restaurant in Des Moines right now and celebrate National Soup Month Wobbly Boots Roadhouse style! No matter what you end up ordering, you’re sure to leave happy and satisfied!

It’s Time For Iowa Football & Holiday Bowl Games!

There are many different reasons to get excited about the holidays and here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive, that includes looking forward to watching the college football bowl games. While there are lots of anticipated games, we’re especially partial to the bowls featuring Iowa football!

This weekend the best place to watch sports in Des Moines is right here at the Boot! The Hawkeyes are up first on Friday night and the Cyclones will be playing on Saturday morning.

Hawkeyes Head to the Holiday Bowl

On Friday, December 27, 2019, at 7:00 pm, our Iowa Hawkeyes will take on the USC Trojans at SDCCU Stadium in San Diego for the Holiday Bowl. This year the Hawkeyes have a couple of extra incentives to go for the win. A victory here will make then the 9th team in program history to win at least 10 games! They will also be playing in honor of the memory of coaching legend Hayden Fry who recently passed away.  We’ve got a record of 9-3 and USC comes in with a record of 8-4, so this should be an exciting match-up to watch!

Cyclones Tackle the Camping World Bowl

On Saturday, December 28, 2019, at 11:00 am, Iowa’s other pride and joy, the Iowa State Cyclones, are taking on Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando. This will be the first time for both teams to play in this bowl game. The Cyclones are heading into the game with a record of 7-5 to Notre Dame’s 10-2 record but we know Iowa State will give us a game to be proud of!

Always a Great Seat at the Boot

With 17 TVs positioned all around our Des Moines BBQ restaurant, there’s not a bad seat in the house! It doesn’t matter whether you belly up to the bar or gather around a table with the gang, either way, you’re going to get a great view of all the action.

While you’re cheering on these incredible Iowa teams, you can also enjoy refreshing drinks from our fully stocked bar. This includes 18 different beers on tap featuring many local Iowa brews. We’ll also have all of your hickory-smoked favorites coming out of the kitchen to keep your energy high throughout the games. Here’s a peek at some of the most popular items to enjoy along with an exciting game of football.

Wobbly Wings

Our jumbo chicken wings are coated in a special house dry rub before being slow-roasted over hickory for the perfect amount of time ensuring that they are the most flavorful, juiciest wings possible. They taste amazing served plain, but they are also delicious tossed in one of our signature sauces.

  • Jamaican Jerk
  • BBQ
  • Dijon Hot
  • Jalapeno Garlic
  • Chipotle Buffalo
  • Habanero BBQ

Wobbly Boots Sampler

Don’t Miss Damon Dotson at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse

The stage at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive is about to be graced, once again, by the extremely talented Damon Dotson! On Friday, December 20, 2019, join us for an evening of the best live music in Des Moines plus a few drinks and some tasty BBQ too.

Damon Dotson is a fan favorite here at the Boot. This extremely popular Iowa musician always makes a busy Friday night even more exciting than usual!

Dotson is an accomplished singer/songwriter based out of our very own city of Des Moines, Iowa. He has been performing for more than a decade all over the Midwest and even released four original albums of his own. These include Tumblin’, Stars & Bars, Atmosphere, and Live @ the Fireworks Cafe. You can find them online, but the music is even more enjoyable in person!

Originally from northwest Iowa, Damon spent a couple of years in Nashville before moving back to Des Moines with a musical style that obviously grew from his time in “Music City, U.S.A.” Once back in his home state, Damon got right back to touring. Channeling inspiration from his own heroes like Dave Matthews and Willie Nelson, he has created a sound that everyone at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, along with the rest of Iowa, loves so much!

He has had the honor of opening for legendary performers like BB King, Willie Nelson, The Beach Boys, as well as modern artists like Matt Nathanson, Edwin McCain, and The Lone Bellow. Dotson tours the Midwest performing both solo shows and with a full band at venues in Minneapolis, Omaha, Chicago, and Iowa. Our BBQ restaurant in Des Moines is just one stop of many and we are proud to be able to showcase this magnificent talent.

Friday is Prime Rib Night!

We pride ourselves on serving the best BBQ in Des Moines 7 days a week but it’s only 2 days out of those 7, Friday & Saturday, that we offer our mouthwatering Smoked Prime Rib Dinner. After 5:00 pm, in addition to our full menu, you can enjoy either a 10-oz. or 14-oz. cut of the juiciest, most flavorful prime rib in Iowa.

Each whole choice prime rib is generously covered with our own wet rub and then slow-smoked over hickory for 5 hours to ensure a taste that will have you coming back for more each weekend! This is served with a great big slice of Texas toast plus 2 of our homestyle side dishes. Smoked Prime Rib Dinner and the music of the amazing Damon Dotson… what a wonderful way to get a weekend started!

Be sure to come in early to our family restaurant in Des Moines this Friday, December 20, 2019. That way you can be sure to grab a great seat for the concert plus have plenty of time to enjoy dinner before the music begins. We’ll have refreshing drinks flowing from the bar all evening and a show on the Wobbly Boots BBQ stage you do not want to miss!

Spicy Foods That Turn Up the Heat at the Boot!

Most of the dishes served at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive are on the milder side when it comes to spiciness but we do have a few menu items that can really turn up the heat. Eating spicy foods actually does have some health benefits for a person plus it’s a great way to quickly warm up your body on a cold Iowa day. Check out some of the spicy dishes we’ve got to temp your taste buds with at our Des Moines family restaurant and learn why it’s a good idea to enjoy them.

Menu Items That “Bring the Heat”

Wobbly Wings
Our jumbo chicken wings get coated in our house dry rub and then are slow-roasted over hickory to create the most flavorful, juiciest wing possible! That process doesn’t make them spicy, but your choice of sauce to coat them in just might! Some of these wing sauces are hotter than the others: BBQ, Chipotle Buffalo, Jamaican Jerk, Dijon Hot, Jalapeno Garlic, and Habanero BBQ.

Buffalo Bacon Chicken & Jalapeno Flatbread
This particular Big City Flatbread starts out getting covered with our Chipotle Buffalo sauce. It’s then topped with grilled chicken breast, bacon, and spicy jalapenos plus our five-cheese pizza blend, all finished with ranch dressing to cool it off a bit.

Jalapeno Garlic Shrimp Dinner
A plate filled with 8 jumbo shrimp gently sauteed in our jalapeno-garlic butter until perfect. They also come with a side of more of that tasty jalapeno-garlic butter for even more flavor.

El Diablo Burger
This one’s a real mouth-burner! We take a half-pound flat top burger, cooked to your liking, and top it with bacon, jalapenos, our Chipotle Buffalo sauce, and pepper-jack cheese. You’ll need an ice-cold beer or sweet tea full of ice to go along with this meal!

Spicy Foods Are Good For a Body

Everyone has their own tolerance for exactly how hot and spicy they can handle their foods. It might interest you to know that spicy foods are not only yummy but they are also great for your physical health. Here are just a few of the reasons why chowing down on something “hot” can be good for you.

  • Stress Relief
Endorphins are released in your body when you consume spicy food. These “feel-good” hormones are like natural pain medication, they can reduce anxiety, and even ease the effects of depression.
  • Heart Health
“Bad” cholesterol can cause damage to a person’s body, but eating chili peppers can lower the risk of this by increasing the breakdown rate of this type of cholesterol. Blood flow is also increased, improving heart function and lowering blood pressure.
  • Weight Loss
Peppers contain a spicy chemical called capsaicin which is great for boosting your metabolism. The effects can last up to 20 minutes after you have eaten. Foods with a little extra heat can also help you to feel full, which reduces cravings for salty, sweet, and fatty foods.
  • Eases Congestion
We have all eaten hot foods before that cause us to begin sniffling. This is because spicy items thin mucus, which is perfect when you have clogged nasal passages. The heat can even help with respiratory problems like bronchitis and asthma.
  • Cancer Prevention
The American Association for Cancer Research has stated that the capsaicin in peppers has the ability to kill some cancer and leukemic cells. It creates a reaction that lowers the risk of tumors too.

A cold, Iowa day is a good time to work on upping your tolerance for spicy foods and we’ve got some great ones for you to taste. The kitchen at our Des Moines BBQ restaurant, in many cases, can add as little or as much “heat” as you can handle. Just let us know how hot you like it and we’ll bring you something to make your mouth water!

When a Full Meal is Too Much – Appetizers!

Sometimes you’re hungry but aren’t quite ready for a full meal. That’s a perfect time to check out the appetizer menu at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive. The only problem might be the fact that even our appetizers are practically a meal themselves! We do offer half-orders of some of them and they’re also great for sharing.

Another wonderful time to head to the appetizer menu at our BBQ restaurant in Des Moines is when you’re hosting a party. (Lots of those happening around the holidays!)
