Wobbly Boots BBQ
The team here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse loves checking out the “bizarre” holidays calendar to see what type of unique holidays are headed our way. We already covered National Pig Day on March 1 in a previous blog and apparently, all of March is National Celery Month. You might think that would not be something a BBQ restaurant in Des Moines would cover, but on the contrary, we’ve got a perfect tribute! March 19 also happens to be National Poultry Day and around here, those last two celebrations tie together quite nicely.
How Do You Celebrate Celery?
The best answer for this fits in with the poultry topic too, and that’s “alongside a plate full of Wobbly Wings!” (That goes for both our bone-in and boneless varieties!) We find that celery can be pretty boring eaten by itself but serving it with hot wings seems to make this vegetable a lot more attractive.
The cold crunchiness is a nice contrast to the meatiness of our perfectly hickory-smoked wings. If you happen to choose a wing sauce that’s a hot one, that celery dipped in dressing is the perfect way to cool your taste buds down for another spicy bite. When it comes to sauces, your delicious choices include; BBQ (of course), Habanero BBQ, Jamaican Jerk, Wobbly Hot, Jalapeno Garlic, and Chipotle Buffalo.
Tastes Like Chicken…
As for National Poultry Day, there are a lot more ways to celebrate that here at the Boot. Most sections of our menu have at least one tasty chicken option. Here’s a look at a few of those:
Buffalo Bacon Chicken & Jalapeno Flatbread
Our flatbread covered in our chipotle buffalo sauce topped with grilled chicken breast, bacon, and jalapenos topped with our five-cheese pizza blend and finished with ranch dressing.
Spinach Artichoke Chicken Flatbread
Our homemade spinach artichoke dip generously spread over our flatbread topped with a five-cheese mozzarella blend, chicken, diced tomatoes, and finished with Parmesan cheese.
Chicken Fried Chicken
A juicy all-white chicken breast tenderized, hand-breaded, and fried to golden perfection. Next, we add some smashed potatoes slathered with white country gravy and serve it all with a side of green beans.
Chicken Strip Basket
All-white boneless chicken tenders hand-cut, buttermilk battered, and hand-breaded to order in our own seasoned flour. Served with your choice of one of our signature side dishes and ranch or honey mustard.
Grilled Chicken Salad
Mixed greens, tomatoes, red onions, cheddar-jack cheese, five-cheese mozzarella blend, bacon, and hard-boiled egg topped with a charbroiled chicken breast.
Honey Mustard Chicken Wrap
Our charbroiled chicken breast cooked perfectly with bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, five cheese mozzarella blend, and our housemade honey mustard dressing, served in a warm wheat tortilla. Delicious!
Buffalo Chicken Wrap
Our homemade chicken tenders fried and tossed in our chipotle buffalo sauce with lettuce, tomato, cheddar-jack cheese, and ranch dressing, served in a warm wheat tortilla. (Simply ask for no buffalo for a regular chicken tender wrap.)
WB Chicken Sandwich
Our all-white chicken breast charbroiled to perfection and topped with our double-smoked ham and Swiss cheese served on a toasted bun with a side of honey mustard. Pickle, lettuce, onion, and tomato available on request.
Tremendous flavor!! A half chicken generously rubbed in our house spices, slow-smoked over hickory, and finished on the grill with a light glaze of our house BBQ sauce.
Chicken & Rib Combo
Yes, we did!! A half rack of our Baby Back Ribs combined with our Hickory-Smoked Half Chicken. A delicious combination.
In our opinion, any day you dine at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive is a holiday for your taste buds! These fun calendar holidays just give you a bonus excuse for coming out to enjoy the best BBQ in Des Moines. No matter what you’re in the mood to celebrate, we’ll find a delicious way to help you do it!
Serving the best BBQ in Des Moines is something we worked hard to make a reality. After all, Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive is classified as a BBQ restaurant. Since we are located in the great state of Iowa, we absolutely had to come up with a way to prepare the best pork tenderloin in Des Moines too. That amazing sandwich has earned its place as an Iowa tradition!
The Famous Iowa Pork Tenderloin
Some silly people argue that the first person to create a breaded pork tenderloin was native to Indiana, but Iowans know that this delicious delicacy truly belongs to us! The pork tenderloin has been a staple in classic Iowa cuisine for as long as anyone can remember.
As last week’s blog all about pork pointed out (read it here if you missed it), Iowa produces more pigs than any other state in the U.S. and turning that asset into a traditional Midwestern favorite creates a unique sense of pride in all of us. Besides them being absolutely delicious, here are a few fun facts about pork tenderloin that you may not already know.
- Pork tenderloin is a lean, delicately flavored meat.
- These cuts are almost as lean as skinless chicken breasts.
- Pork has more protein than chicken and is high in zinc, iron, and B-vitamins.
- Pork tenderloin is a thin, small cut of the pig, making it the perfect size to cook quickly over high heat. Pork loin, on the other hand, tastes best slow-roasted.
- It is sometimes also referred to as a pork filet or pork tender.
Pork Tenderloin Wobbly Boots-Style
We simply had to try our hand at this famous dish and according to the diners at our family restaurant in Des Moines, we’ve done an outstanding job! We took this classic sandwich and turned it into something simply irresistible. Even the pickiest pork tenderloin fan will be impressed with this big boy!
It starts out with a more-than-generous portion of meat. (This is one GIGANTIC sandwich!) Next, our chefs tenderize it and hand-dip it in buttermilk followed by a coating of expertly seasoned flour and breadcrumbs. It is then fried to a beautiful golden brown, and placed on a bun. You probably won’t be able to see the bun unless you pick up that humongous pork tenderloin, but believe us, it’s under there! Don’t be surprised if you need a doggy bag to take home when you’re full.
If you’re serious about your pork tenderloin, as most Iowa foodies are, that big beautiful sandwich is the center of attention during your meal. Still, we make sure that it has a delicious sidekick to go along with it too. Our incredible homestyle side dishes take the pork tenderloin from a sandwich to a full-fledged meal. Your choices include:
- Creamy Cole Slaw
- Green Beans with Bacon
- Gourmet Potato Salad
- Legendary Baked Beans
- Cheesy Corn & Ham
- Smashed Potatoes & Gravy
- Cottage Cheese
- Seasoned Fries
- Homemade Mac & Cheese
- Upgraded Side Dishes:
- Boat of Mac & Cheese
- Sweet Potato Fries
- Garden Salad
- Cup of Soup
- Half-Order of Onion Rings
- Half-Order of Texas Fries
Even though the pork tenderloin at Wobbly Boots BBQ is one of our most popular dishes, it’s far from your only choice! It’s in great company with many other tasty sandwiches, hickory-smoked meats, BBQ dinners, burgers, salads, flatbreads, appetizers, and much more. You may not be absolutely sure which dish you’ll be having when you come into our family restaurant in Des Moines, but one thing is for sure, you’re going to be happy and satisfied when you’re done eating!
National Pig Day lands on March 1st and since Iowa is the nation’s largest pork-producing state, this makes an excellent topic for our Des Moines BBQ restaurant‘s blog this week. You’ll find lots and lots of delicious dishes featuring this incredible animal on the menu at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive.
Our great state is responsible for raising about 1/3 of the nation’s pigs. As a matter of fact, they outnumber humans in Iowa nearly 4 to 1! Over 6,000 pig farms can be found around Iowa and at any given time, there are about 22 million pigs being raised. It’s no surprise, with so many of them around, that pork is a food you’ll find throughout the Boot’s extensive menu.

We bet you’re wondering just what makes Wobbly Boots BBQ so darn good. Well, here’s a closer look at the process that tickles taste buds and has mouths watering all over Iowa.
The type of BBQ you’ll discover at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive was inspired by many different BBQ masters from around the country. We lovingly refer to it as a “hybrid style” of BBQ combining elements of the dishes found in the BBQ meccas of the U.S.A. – Kansas City, St. Louis, Memphis, and Texas.
We took our favorite parts away from each of these styles and put them all together to create a taste that people can’t seem to get enough of! Luckily for all of you, we’re open 7 days a week, year-round, and smoke our meats on a daily basis.
Smoked Over Hickory
The key to creating the Wobbly Boots flavor that is so popular around these parts is the hickory-smoked goodness we infuse into each bite. First, we slow-smoke our succulent meats over hickory, allowing the incredible flavors of each type of meat to come through boldly. Our clever chefs have figured out exactly how long each meat needs to spend in the smoker to become it’s flavorful best.
Next, those meats are coated (or served with a side of) our extraordinary house-recipe BBQ sauce. The end result is a plate full of the best hickory-smoked BBQ in Des Moines that will leave you fully satisfied yet anxious to come back again for more!
You won’t find our BBQ sauce anyplace else but right here. (Unless you pick up a bottle to take home with you or visit the Wobbly Boots Roadhouse at the Lake of the Ozarks run by our good friends, that is.)

A great big plate full of the best BBQ in Des Moines will definitely warm you up on a cold, Iowa day or night. While you’re waiting for the talented chefs at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive to cook it up for you, we’ve got a few tasty beverages from behind the bar that can start thawing you out. Here are a few ideas for a delicious drink to tide you over until the food arrives.
Hot tea or coffee always hits the spot on a cold day and when you add some special ingredients from behind the Wobbly Boots BBQ bar, it tastes even better! Some of our favorite coffee add-ins taste wonderful mixed into hot chocolate too. (Perfect for the person that doesn’t mind a bit of dessert before dinner!) These include Bailey’s, Irish Whiskey, Kahlua, and Amaretto.
As for hot tea, it’s a main ingredient in a classic Hot Toddy, which also contains honey, lemon juice, and a hearty shot of whiskey. (Actually, some recipes skip the tea and just use hot water!) An added benefit of this particular cocktail is the fact that it’s also terrific for tackling many symptoms of a winter cold.
We already mentioned a Hot Toddy above, but whiskey alone has a reputation for warming up a person when the weather gets cold. A shot of whiskey gives you an immediate sensation of warmth because it causes your blood vessels to dilate which brings warm blood closer to the surface of your skin. The feeling won’t last long but it will sure taste great going down! By the time the warmth wears off, your dinner should be hot and ready to take its place.
Even though this drink is served over ice, it can still bring the heat! With the proper ingredients added to the base mix, our bartenders can really give your Bloody Mary a spicy kick. Just tell us how hot you think you can handle it. With the addition of some special spices, the right amount of hot sauce, and certain flavored vodkas, you’ll soon be enjoying a cocktail that will definitely warm you up.
Cold Beer & Hot BBQ
If you aren’t the type of person that likes to drink hot beverages along with a hot meal, once the food arrives you may want to switch over to drinking something cold and refreshing. For example, our large selection of 18 different draft beers is a popular choice to pair with hickory-smoked BBQ. We always keep a nice selection of locally brewed Iowa beers on tap too, so you know we’ll have something you’ll love!
The talented bartenders at our BBQ restaurant & bar in Des Moines are here to help you decide exactly which drink you’ll enjoy most to go along with your meal. If you happen to join us during Happy Hour any Monday-Friday from 3-6 pm, you may even get some of those awesome drinks at a discounted price! Hot or cold, we’ll make sure you get something refreshing and delicious.
The menu at our Des Moines BBQ restaurant features an enormous variety of items, both BBQ and non-BBQ dishes, that make it extremely difficult to choose what to order. (They’re all so darn good!) - Our House Favorite Brisket Burnt Ends
Chicken & Rib Combo
Our hickory-smoked meats go beyond just what we offer for sandwiches and smoked meat plates. We couldn’t call ourselves a BBQ restaurant without knowing how to smoke a succulent rack of ribs, but we also deliciously slow-smoke chicken over hickory as well. When you order this tasty dish, you get the best of both worlds all on one plate!
Ribbies & Wings
The appetizer menu is another section where you’ll find hickory-smoked goodness throughout. Our Wobbly Wings are a customer favorite, but those Baby Back Ribs are hard to resist too. With this menu item, you get 4 of each. Delicious!

Craving a bit more than just Ribbies & Wings? Then you’ll want to take a look at this amazing sampler platter. For this plate, you’d better come in hungry or willing to share with the rest of the table!
If you’re trying to include more vegetables in your diet but the smell of our savory, hickory-smoked meats is tempting you to skip the salad, you don’t have to. Our Cowboy Cobb, also referred to as the “King of Salads,” allows you to have your salad and your BBQ too! A chilled bowl of crisp greens is generously topped with our smoked ham and turkey, plus crumbled bacon, hard-boiled egg, avocado, tomatoes, red onion, cheddar-jack cheese, and our 5-cheese mozzarella blend. This one satisfies even the biggest of appetites and it’s available in a half-portion too.
Mac & Cheese Burger
Sometimes the main dish is an easy decision, like our Black Angus burgers, but you’re still having a hard time deciding between our many homestyle side dishes. With this dish, our famous homemade Mac & Cheese already comes on the burger but you still get to enjoy another savory side dish along with the meal! (Although the diner in the picture below opted for double Mac & Cheese. We totally get that!)
Not only are the combination plates at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive a great way to keep from having to decide between your favorite foods, but they’re also a wonderful way to try more than one of our menu items in the same visit. The next time you bring the gang to our family restaurant in Des Moines, consider ordering one of these delicious dishes. You won’t be disappointed!
