Happy National Prime Rib Day! – Celebrate at the Boot

National Prime Rib Day falls on a Saturday this year (April 27) and that just so happens to be one of the 2 days each week when we serve the best prime rib in Des Moines! We are famous for our mouthwatering hickory-smoked meats at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive and our hickory-smoked Prime Rib Dinner is a delicious way to celebrate this fantastic cut of steak.

Why Is Prime Rib So Delicious?

Prime rib is one of the most savory, juicy, and flavorful cuts of meat you can get from a cow. This particular cut of beef is sometimes referred to as a standing rib roast, and it’s the finest cut of beef you will find. It is cut from the primal rib, one of the eight primal cuts of beef. The amount of marbling found on prime rib makes a big difference in the quality. The more fat that is woven throughout a particular cut, the more tender and juicy the final product will taste.

Prime Rib Dinner at the Boot

We take special care in the way we prepare prime rib at our family restaurant in Des Moines. Every single serving is hand-cut, perfectly seasoned, and slow-smoked for 5 hours to marvelously juicy and flavorful perfection. Our prime rib dinners are so special, as a matter of fact, that they are only available every Friday & Saturday night after 5 pm. You can order it as either a 10-oz or a 14-oz cut and it comes with a great big slice of Texas toast and your choice of two of our amazing homestyle side dishes.

7 Fun Facts About an Irresistible Side Dish – Good Ol’ Mac & Cheese

Even though Wobbly Boots Roadhouse‘s homemade Mac & Cheese is most often considered a side dish, for some people it’s a big reason they dine at our BBQ restaurant in Des Moines. Our version is so rich, creamy, and savory that it’s nearly as famous as our award-winning hickory-smoked BBQ!

As a matter of fact, we make an entire meal out of it on the kids’ menu and it’s even become a main ingredient on one of our signature burgers. (Appropriately known as the Mac & Cheese Burger.) If you are a mac & cheese fan (and we know you all are) you will be interested to learn the intriguing facts we found out about this tasty treat.

  • English Origins

Since macaroni is pasta, many assume it’s an Italian dish but it is actually of English origin.

  • It’s a Classic

There is evidence that this dish made of pasta and cheese has been around since the 14th century. Two recipes were found in medieval cookbooks. One was made with parmesan and pasta and the other contained fresh, hand-cut pasta sandwiched between a mix of melted butter and cheese.

  • From Italy to the U.S.

Even though this dish is English in origin, the story of mac & cheese coming to the United States did begin in Italy. American president Thomas Jefferson discovered the food while in Paris. In 1793, he commissioned the American ambassador to Paris to purchase the machine used for making macaroni. Not quite able to recreate the taste he fell in love with, Jefferson later had macaroni and parmesan cheese imported to Monticello, his primary plantation. There he served this favorite food at a state dinner as “a pie called macaroni” and our country’s fascination with mac & cheese was born.

  • Making the Top Ten

Mac & cheese is consistently in top ten lists for favorite comfort foods as well as favorite kids’ foods. (We believe the mac & cheese at the Boot is delicious enough to claim the #1 spot on both of those lists!)

  • A Famous Color

Macaroni & cheese become a Crayola crayon color in 1993 as a part of their orange hue family.

  • The Perfect Pairing

Apparently, it is said the burgundy wine is the perfect wine to pair with mac & cheese. We’re definitely willing to give that a try, but we also enjoy it with an ice-cold Iowa-brewed beer or a big refreshing glass of iced tea and our youngest diners seem to enjoy it with a healthy glass of milk.

  • A Tasty Holiday

This amazing side dish gets its own national holiday on the calendar every year – July 14. (Of course, when you come into our Des Moines family restaurant, we’re ready to “celebrate” mac & cheese with you any day of the year, 7 days a week!)

Mac & Cheese at the Boot

The mac & cheese at Wobbly Boots BBQ  is primarily served as one of our many homestyle side dishes, either in a cup or, for those that simply can’t get enough of it, in a bigger boat. As we mentioned earlier, it is one of the most popular meals on our kids’ menu & our Mac & Cheese Burger combines two favorite foods into one mouthwatering sandwich. Come in soon and enjoy a cup (or a boat) for yourself!

Why Eat BBQ For Dinner?… Why Not! 5 Great Reasons To Do It

When faced with so many different available dining choices when you go out, you may have to do a little convincing to get everyone in the group to agree on one place. When you’re craving the best BBQ in Des Moines and simply nothing else will satisfy that hunger, you may need to do some convincing to get everyone on the same page.

If the people in your group have already tasted the food from Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive, it will be an easy argument to win! If they haven’t yet had the pleasure, here are 5 excellent reasons to share that will convince them BBQ is the only way to go.

#1 – It Tastes Great!

In our humble opinion, that should be enough reason to choose BBQ for your next meal! Not all BBQ is equal though, so you may need to tell your friends just why Wobbly Boots BBQ is worth the trip. First of all, we slow-smoke our meats over hickory for the intense, rich, full-bodied flavor that only hickory can bring out. After years of practice and perfection, our cooks know exactly how long to leave each meat in the smoker to make sure it reaches its most mouthwatering potential.

Add to that deliciousness our house recipe BBQ sauce and special dry rubs, and you’ve got a taste that will leave anyone wanting to come back again and again. Both the cooking process and the sauce recipe make up our hybrid-style of BBQ which was inspired by the BBQ meccas of the U.S.A.: Kansas City, St. Louis, Memphis, Texas, and the deep South. We learned from the greats, but created a flavor that you will only find here at the Boot!

#2 – LOTS of Variety on the Menu

You may be faced with one person in your group that swears they don’t like BBQ, no matter how it’s prepared. (Yes, we know that sounds strange, but there are a couple of people out there. Maybe they just haven’t tried Wobbly Boots BBQ ye!) For the friend that refuses to eat BBQ, mention all of the non-BBQ items that can also be found on our menu.

For example, we have Spinach Artichoke Dip and Crab Stuffed Mushrooms for starters, plus savory salads, fantastic flatbreads, Black Angus Burgers, and sandwiches like the Catfish BLT and our Famous Tenderloin. (An Iowa tradition!) The menu also has entrees like juicy steaks and a Hot Smoked Turkey that’s a very popular choice around here.

#3 – LOTS of BBQ Choices

Back to the cool people that do appreciate the wonder that is BBQ, they’ve got tons of choices too. As a matter of fact, we cook up so many different ways for you to enjoy our hickory-smoked meats, you’ll need to keep coming back, again and again, to give them all a try but by the time you do that, we just may come up with a few more!

The many hickory-smoked meats we offer include, but are not limited to:

  • Hand-Pulled Pork
  • Sliced Turkey Breast
  • Sweet Smoked Italian Sausage
  • Applewood Smoked Ham
  • Tender Smoked Beef Brisket
  • Brisket Burnt Ends
  • Baby Back Ribs
  • Chicken
  • Wobbly Wings

#4 – All Ages Love the Boot

If it’s the family that you’re trying to convince rather than a group of friends, the atmosphere and down-home hospitality of our family restaurant in Des Moines will make everyone feel right at home. Young diners will be pleased with the choices on our kids’ menu, which include favorites like Chicken Strips, Mini Corn Dogs, Cheeseburger, Grilled Cheese, and Mac & Cheese. There’s even a kid’s version of our Pork Sliders if they’re ready to start moving toward becoming a smoked meat lover.

Let them use our tasty BBQ sauce for dipping and they’ll be hooked! The very best part is that eating BBQ encourages you to get a little messy, which kids absolutely love. As long as you take care of cleaning up yourselves when you’re done (we have plenty of wet naps for you) we’re happy to clean up all of the dishes. (Which of course, Mom and Dad love!)

#5 – BBQ Pairs Perfectly With Beer & Sports

Sports fans will be thrilled to find out they can eat BBQ while enjoying all of their favorite sports on our 17 TVs which are placed strategically throughout the restaurant. It doesn’t matter whether you pull up a seat at the bar or a table in the dining room, you won’t miss any of the action.

Ice-cold beer is an excellent beverage to wash down a plate full of hickory-smoked BBQ. Here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, we not only have a wide selection of bottled beers but 18 incredible beers on tap as well. We always have a wonderful selection of local Iowa beers mixed in there too, because after all, Iowans know how to brew an amazing beer! If you didn’t know that already, come in soon and let us pour one for you.

Well, while writing this we’ve certainly convinced ourselves that dinner at our BBQ restaurant & bar in Des Moines sounds like a perfect idea tonight, and we’re willing to bet you think so too! Now all you have to do is share this wisdom with all of your friends and you’ll be dining at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in no time.

Try Our Savory Salads & Fantastic Flatbreads

Although we advertise ourselves mainly as a BBQ restaurant in Des Moines, that’s not the only delicious dish we specialize in. The menu at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive is full of all kinds of amazing flavors. There’s truly something for everyone, even if you have fellow diners in your group that aren’t particularly BBQ lovers. (Hard to believe, but a few do exist!) You’ll find black Angus burgers, juicy steaks, Southern comfort foods, down-home sandwiches, and so much more. Today we’ll be featuring two other alternative menu items, our savory salads and fantastic flatbreads.

Go For the Greens

Salads are a great way to get in a full serving of fresh, healthy vegetables. Some might say that a simple salad isn’t enough to fill them up, but a Wobbly Boots BBQ salad is anything but simple! These particular salads are more than enough to satisfy your hunger plus we add our hickory-smoked meats to many of them for that special Wobbly Boots twist. Whether you want to eat lightly or heartily, our salads will take care of you. Dressing choices include; Ranch, French, Honey Mustard, Chipotle Ranch, Blue Cheese, Italian, Fat-Free Ranch, and Thousand Island.

The Garden Salad
A crisp blend of greens topped with cheddar-jack, five cheese mozzarella blend, tomatoes, and red onions.

Cowboy Cobb
The king of salads! A chilled bowl of crisp greens generously topped with smoked ham & turkey, crumbled bacon, hard-boiled egg, avocado, tomatoes, red onion, cheddar-jack & our five cheese mozzarella blend. This one’s so large, we even offer it in a half-sized portion!

Bacon-Shrimp Salad
A giant chilled salad bowl filled with mixed greens, bleu cheese crumbles, diced tomatoes, red onions, a hard-boiled egg, and finished with jumbo bacon wrapped shrimp.

Grilled Chicken Salad
Our giant chilled salad bowl filled with mixed greens, diced tomatoes, red onions, cheddar-jack cheese, five cheese mozzarella blend, bacon, and a hard-boiled egg topped with a charbroiled chicken breast.

Chicken Strip Salad
Our large chilled salad bowl filled with mixed leafy greens and generously topped with tomatoes, red onions, five cheese mozzarella blend, and finished with our hand-breaded tender chicken strips. Also, try your chicken “buffalo style” for a little spicier version.

Big City Flatbreads

Very similar to pizza (which everyone loves) flatbreads are made form a thinner, crispier crust using lighter toppings and sauce. Often something other than tomato sauce is used, as you’ll see in the following irresistible flatbread creations we’ve come up with at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse.

Crab Rangoon
Wobbly Boots own crab rangoon filling slathered on our flatbread pizza crust, topped with our five cheese pizza blend and finished with fried won tons and a sweet chili drizzle. A customer favorite!

BBQ Brisket
Our homemade BBQ sauce spread over our flatbread pizza crust, topped with slow smoked brisket, red onion, and a combination of our five cheese pizza blend & cheddar jack cheese. Outstanding flavor!!

Buffalo Bacon Chicken & Jalapeno
Our flatbread covered in our chipotle buffalo sauce topped with grilled chicken breast, bacon & jalapenos, and our five cheese pizza blend, finished with ranch dressing.

We start with our thin flatbread pizza crust, spread on our homemade cheese sauce, add our five cheese pizza blend, and top all of that with smoked ham, bacon crumbles, lettuce, and tomatoes, all drizzled with ranch dressing.

Spinach Artichoke Chicken
Our homemade spinach artichoke dip generously spread over our flatbread topped with five cheese mozzarella blend, chicken, diced tomatoes, and finished with Parmesan cheese.

So there you go. For those very few non-BBQ fans out there, and when the BBQ lovers are simply in the mood to try something different, the gigantic salads and creative flatbreads at our family restaurant in Des Moines are excellent items to tempt your taste buds. Just like all of the meals coming out of the kitchen at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, they are absolutely delicious!

The Intriguing History of a Delicious Appetizer – the Fried Pickle

Fried pickles are a delicious appetizer, but surprisingly enough, not a menu item that a lot of people have given a try. That seems strange to us because just about everyone loves pickles and pretty much no one can resist anything deep-fried. Also, they taste delicious paired with the best BBQ in Des Moines! The fried pickle is actually a delicacy throughout the southern United States and we’ve brought our own delicious version to Iowa at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse.

Whether you decide to have fried pickles for a snack, an appetizer, or as a delicious side dish, it’s an item that is sure to be a new favorite once you’ve tasted it. Here at the Boot, each order consists of a half-pound of pickle chips that have been hand-breaded in our specially seasoned flour and then fried to a beautiful golden brown. We serve them with a side of chipotle ranch, and they even taste amazing dipped in our very own house-made BBQ sauce.

Who Invented the Fried Pickle?

While our family restaurant in Des Moines has one of the best fried pickle recipes you’ll ever experience, we can’t take credit for inventing this tasty treat. As with most origin stories, more than one person takes credit for coming up with the recipe. There is record of a “French Fried Pickle” recipe being published as early as 1962 for the Food Editors Conference in New York.

Another story, which sounds like it originated too late to truly be the original, is from the Hollywood Cafe out of Hollywood, Mississippi. Their tale from 1969 begins with a crowded restaurant and a cook without enough catfish to feed them all. In desperation, he reached for the industrial-sized jar of dill pickles that was handy, rolled them in the catfish batter, dropped them in the fryer, and served them to the patrons. They were an immediate hit.

Perhaps the most popular story, which seems to fit into a more plausible time frame, is out of Atkins, Arkansas. In 1963, Bernell “Fatman” Austin owned the Duchess Drive-In across the highway from the Atkins Pickle Plant. (FYI: Atkins is known as the pickle capital of Arkansas!) Staring across the street at the pickle plant, Bernell was inspired to create a recipe. That particular recipe is a well-guarded, family secret to this day. You can now only get a taste of Bernell’s original creation once a year at the annual Picklefest held in May in Atkins. The family dishes up about 2,500 orders of the “Fatman’s Original Fried Dill Pickles” at every festival and the money raised is used for scholarships and charities that Bernell supported.

At some point in the late 1990s, three high school friends brought the southern deep-fried pickle to the Minnesota State Fair, calling them the “Preferred Pickle.” They were so popular, the same three friends began manufacturing them under KWF Foods and selling them to the food service industry.

Try Some at the Boot

Regardless of who truly get the credit for inventing the original fried pickle, our Des Moines BBQ restaurant has perfected our own recipe! The next time you’re here, live a little and try something new. Ask for an order of Wobbly Boots BBQ’s delicious fried pickles from the appetizer menu and you just may have found your new favorite dish!

Confluence Brewing Company

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse calls the Des Moines area home, as does this fantastic brewery. Just like our great home state, Confluence beers are honest, hard-working, friendly, and unpretentious! Back in 1991, Confluence’s head brewer, John Martin, found a passion for brewing beer using Iowa’s bountiful crops. After years of brewing beer at home, John met fellow home brewer and co-founder, Ken Broadhead. The two came together to launch Confluence Brewing Company in 2012, and the result is the amazing beer we have on tap for you here at the Boot.

  • Ruthie

Peace Tree Brewing Company

Peace Tree Brewing Company has called Knoxville home since 2010. The name comes from the historic grand sycamore that grew near the town of Red Rock, which was a meeting place for many generations of Native Americans, and later a meeting place for fur traders too. The tree is this company’s symbol because they strive to make beers that will be “shared with friends and strangers alike and act as a catalyst for conversations, new friendships, and important agreements – in line with the lore of the Peace Tree of Red Rock.” We currently carry their wonderful

  • Mile Long Lager

  • Blonde Fatale

Boone Valley

This brewery can be found in Boone. (Obviously!) Their journey started as a fun notion to make beer from a kit but soon turned into a passion for making delicious beer. After winning multiple awards it became obvious that these recipes needed their own brewery. Brewer Rick is often referred to as the “Willie Wonka of Beers” and the “Phantom Brewer” around these parts, somewhat of a legend. The Boot is proud to offer their tasty

  • Roxy Red

Firetrucker Brewery

The people behind this local brewery in Ankeny live, breathe, and eat local. Only local Iowa ingredients are used to make their beers. A sense of innovation, a sense of community, and the desire to improve life are at the forefront during the creation of each of their beers. You can expect to get lots of flavor while still maintaining a clean finish. On tap, we have their

  • Uptown IPA

Even More Draft Choices

In addition to the Iowa beers we proudly offer on tap, Wobbly Boots BBQ also has many of the mainstream favorites you know and love. “Great smoked meat sandwich! They have the widest and tastiest onion rings I’ve ever had. I’ll post more the next time because I’m going back!” ~Ronnie Fairchild

“The food at this place is delicious! I had the Brisky sandwich – brisket and smoked turkey smothered in delicious white cheese – and loved it! A friend had onion rings and they were huge and fried to perfection (and tasty…I stole one to try along with some of the dip.) Oh… and I forgot to mention the to die for cornbread appetizer – served piping hot with honey butter – smells wonderful and tastes even better!”

“I love Wobbly. Spectacular BBQ for a great value. Always wonderful service and you will most likely not be waiting more than 10 min at most for your food. Staff is usually on point as they make sure you are enjoying the dining experience. I’ll forever be a customer as I’ve never had a poor experience at any time and I’ve been here dozens of times.” ~Cory Mitchell

“Good barbecue. Wife is not a barbecue fanatic. This place may have won her over! Woohoo for me!” ~Rod Schwenneker

“We stopped over for the night and ate here. The food was good and the service was great. Portions seemed very reasonable. The Cowboy Cobb Salad was HUGE!” ~Roberta B.

“Cool Place… Great BBQ: The Wobbly Boots Roadhouse restaurant has a great “country and western” atmosphere. We ate on the bar side and it is an excellent place to watch a game with numerous TVs. They had a nice selection of craft beers on tap with many local varieties. I had a brisket sandwich and it was excellent! I will definitely come back when visiting Des Moines.” ~RobR896

“WOW!!! Went for lunch one afternoon to check this place out. My husband ordered the tenderloin with a side of beans, and I ordered the burnt ends sandwich with a side of fries. The burnt ends were falling off the bun and were delicious! Very generously heaped! The tenderloin could have filled two or three buns easily and had an amazing breading. Everything was very good. The service was fantastic – refilling drinks and getting us everything we needed before we asked. Christina was our server and was very friendly and personable. The atmosphere and look of the place is cool and very original country type style, fitting with the food served. The menu offered a large variety from burgers, flatbreads, appetizers, sandwiches, platters, wraps. Definitely will be back!” ~JerriAL1

“Great food, great drinks, and great service!! But best of all this place is peanut safe!! As a grandmother to a grandson who is allergic to peanuts, what a relief to know they do not have anything on the menu that comes in contact with peanuts!! They should be proud and say it loud!!” ~Kerri Allen Rubenbauer

“The waitresses were great with our party of 30.” ~Chris McKnight Wilmeth

“Haven’t had a bad experience yet! Atmosphere is fantastic, great place to get great food and not have to get dressed up. And we can watch sports!” ~Stacy Henningsen

“The food, while reasonably priced, is delicious. The sweet Italian sausage and the brisket burnt ends are really good. The atmosphere is a relaxed, western theme sports bar. The staff is friendly.” ~Colleen Jones

“The Bacon Wrapped Shrimp Salad is the bomb!!! Such great food and service!!” ~Kris Meyer Neal

“Great food. Reasonable prices. The brisket is amazing. I had the burnt ends tonight they are fabulous. The cheese corn side is still my favorite.” ~Tara Adams Knapp
