Wobbly Boots BBQ
A lot of people get excited about Labor Day Weekend because of the bonus day off of work that most of them get to enjoy. Sports fans, like us here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive, get excited about the fact that Labor Day Weekend is the beginning of another college football season! Since this is the best place to watch sports in Des Moines and Iowa has two football teams that we love to cheer for, we’re dedicating this blog to the joy of watching football at the Boot!
First and foremost, you need to know when your teams are playing so that you can make plans to come in early and grab your favorite seat. Of course, with 17 TVs placed conveniently all around the restaurant, there’s really not a bad seat in the house. That also allows you to keep tabs on all of your other favorite sporting events happening at the same time.
Here’s a look at both the Hawkeyes and Cyclones season schedules this year. We only have to wait until week #2 to see them take each other on, which always has us a bit torn. (Is it wrong to cheer for both sides?)
Iowa Hawkeyes 2018
Iowa State Cyclones 2018
Here at the Boot, we have a fully stocked bar so we can mix up all of your favorite cocktails. Still, there’s something special about the pairing of beer and football together. Fortunately, we also carry an excellent selection of ice cold beers in the bottle plus 18 tasty brews on tap! The highlight of our draft beers for many is the fact that we always have a few spots reserved for our favorite Iowa-brewed beers. These tend to change occasionally, but currently, you can enjoy the following local beers on tap at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse.
- Firetrucker Uptown IPA
- Firetrucker Pumper Truck Porter
- Boone Valley Roxie Irish Red
- Confluence Des Moines IPA
- Confluence Farmer John’s
- Confluence Blue Corn Lager
- Peace Tree Blonde Fatale
- Peace Tree Grapefruit IPA
You’re going to want something to eat while you’re watching the games, and there’s nothing better to go along with Iowa football and Iowa beer than some good ol’ Iowa BBQ! We start serving lunch on weekdays at 11 am, but on the weekends we open early at 9 am with our delicious brunch options. That means that even when our teams play early, you can come in and get situated with plenty of time before kickoff.
During the Iowa games this Labor Day Weekend, we’re offering a few of our most popular “football foods” on special. For just $5 each, you can order the following three amazing appetizers along with $3 domestic tall boy drafts.

Even if you weren’t hungry when you started reading this, we’re willing to bet that you are now! Come on into our family restaurant in Des Moines and order an appetizer or two from our Wobbly Boots BBQ menu. Whether you bring in the gang to share them with you or tackle a plate on your own, it’s going to be a delicious experience.
Everyone working here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive seems happy almost all of the time, and as we look around the room of our BBQ restaurant in the Des Moines area, our customers look extremely happy too. It could just be a coincidence, but it’s much more likely that it has something to do with the BBQ! What would make us think that? Well, here are 5 very good reasons and we believe you’ll agree.
All it takes is opening the front doors of our family-friendly restaurant in Des Moines and the glorious scent of hickory smoke puts a smile on your face before you even realize it’s there! Once you shake yourself back to reality, you may notice the other scents of the various menu items being served around the room. Now that happiness turns into excitement about getting seated and ordering your own delicious-smelling dish.
Next comes that glorious, mouthwatering flavor! Underneath, there’s the distinct taste of the hickory smoke that our meats are slow-cooked in for hours. If you’ve decided to have yours served “wet” (and we highly suggest that you do) you’ve got the added flavor of our house-made, secret recipe BBQ sauce too. It only takes a bite to turn your grin into a great big BBQ-coated smile!
Our hickory-smoked meats alone give you all kinds of choices, allowing you to try something different each time that you visit. Another option is to bring a big group of people with you, order all of our smoked meats at once, and share with the table. You get to choose from: Hand-Pulled Pork, 100% White Meat Turkey Breast, Sweet Smoked Italian Sausage, Applewood Smoked Pit Ham, Tender Smoked Brisket, and our house-favorite Brisket Burnt Ends. Once you’ve tried all of that, we’ve also got a great big menu filled with even more options that are equally as amazing. So many choices!
It Brings People Together
The Boot is a perfect place to bring the entire family or meet up with a group of friends. The atmosphere is inviting, and the staff here is friendly and welcoming. You can simply enjoy a nice dinner together any night of the week, or you can gather for a special occasion and celebrate. We’ve got 17 TVs throughout the restaurant, so it’s also the best place to watch sports in Des Moines every time your favorite team plays. (Even if it’s not your favorite team, it’s still fun to watch!)
It Pairs Great With Beer
They don’t call it “Happy Hour” for nothing! Every Monday-Friday from 3-6 pm we host the best Happy Hour in Des Moines with awesome specials on mixed drinks and beer. You’ll find great deals on your drinks during many of the games, too. The month of July brings us yet another holiday to celebrate one of our favorite foods – National Mac & Cheese Day on Saturday, July 14, 2018. This delicious food is most often served as a savory side dish at our Des Moines BBQ restaurant, but the version we make is scrumptious enough to be a meal all on its own! (And it is on the Wobbly Boots Roadhouse kids menu!) If you are a big fan of mac & cheese (and we know you all are) then you should enjoy these interesting facts we uncovered about this tasty treat, so keep reading.
It’s a Classic
Macaroni & cheese is on just about everyone’s top ten list of favorite foods in the world in some form or another. There is just something warm, filling, and delicious about this incredible comfort food. It originated as a dish of cooked macaroni pasta and cheese sauce, most commonly cheddar, and was traditionally baked in the oven as a casserole.
Although many assume that since it is pasta, it must be an Italian dish, it is actually of English origin. The story that brought it to the United States, however, did begin in Italy. There is evidence of casseroles made from pasta and cheese as early as the 14th century. Two different recipes were found in medieval cookbooks, one made with parmesan and pasta and the other containing fresh, hand-cut pasta sandwiched between a mix of melted butter and cheese.
Fit For a King President
American president Thomas Jefferson is credited with bringing the deliciousness of macaroni and cheese to the United States. He discovered the food while in Paris. Jefferson described it by sketching the pasta and writing detailed notes about the way it was prepared. In 1793, he commissioned the American ambassador to Paris, William Short, to purchase the machine used for making it. Apparently, that machine didn’t recreate the taste Jefferson was searching for, so he later had macaroni and Parmesan cheese imported to Monticello, his primary plantation. In 1802, Jefferson served this favorite food of his at a state dinner where it was referred to as “a pie called macaroni.” That’s when America’s fascination with mac & cheese began.
Mac & Cheese at the Boot
The Mac & Cheese at Wobbly Boots BBQ is primarily served as one of our many homestyle side dishes, either in a cup or, for those that simply can’t get enough of it, in a bigger boat. It is one of the most popular meals on our kids’ menu, too.
For the adventurous burger lover, we also serve the savory and sizable Mac & Cheese Burger. This extremely popular “burger of the week” is now a staple on our regular menu. We take a Black Angus burger cooked to your liking, cover it with our homemade mac & cheese, top that with cheddar jack cheese, and serve it open-faced on Texas toast. Since what is normally a side dish is actually a part of the meal in this case, you still get another side dish along with it! (More mac & cheese, maybe?)
So whether you decide to come in on Saturday for National Mac & Cheese Day or stop by on any other day of the week, we’ll have the best Mac & Cheese in Des Moines hot and ready for you! Wobbly Boots Roadhouse takes pride in creating the most mouthwatering meals possible for our wonderful customers, so come in hungry, and expect to leave fully satisfied!
